| Pearl is a friendly, very affectionate, playful and outgoing kitty who likes to be with her people, and will follow you around. She's extremely social, devoted and loving. Likes head rubs and will fall over on the floor at your feet for petting. Very cuddly. Also a very active player with toys of any kind. We believe she may be Javanese, which is a slightly longer haired cat in the Oriental family, similar in both type and personality to a Siamese. She is what is known as a "Lynx Point". Her eyes are distinctly oriental, has the overall wedge head shape and beautiful large sapphire blue eyes. Her body hair is silky and close-lying, not "fluffy". She is curious and likes to investigate drawers, cupboards, and paper bags. This kitty is a real talker; however she is not loud and speaks frequently in a soft sweet meow; you only have to look at her to get her to "talk" to you. She makes eye contact with you and gives lots of "silent meows". She needs attention and wants to sleep with her "person". |

| Puppers is available for adoption from the El Cajon Animal Shelter where she was brought after her beloved owner died. According to the family, he was an elderly gentleman who treated Puppers like she was his own daughter. She was loved and treated well. She's an indoor dog, and completely housebroken....she's very well-behaved inside. Puppers gets along well with other dogs and will be fine with kids. She stands in her kennel all day watching and waiting for someone to come pick her up. It's been a month. Heartbreaking. It's tough for an 8 year old Pit Bull to compete for attention, but hopefully someone will drive over to the shelter today just to meet this sweet lady, and give her a second chance. Please visit Puppers at the El Cajon Animal Shelter, located at 1275 N. Marshall Street, open from 10 a.m. to 5:30 p.m. Tuesday through Saturday. Puppers' ID number is 10989, and her adoption fee is just $30, and includes spay, vaccinations, microchip and health tests. |

| One of the most adorable puppies i've ever seen...Spring is just 9-weeks-old and she's a brilliant mix of both Border Collie and Australian Shepherd. In addition to being very smart, she's a bundle of puppy love, with a sweet, calm personality. According to her foster family, she's almost housetrained, she's crate trained, and loves everyone and everything she meets. She's been very well socialized with other dogs, both big and small, and would do well with kids who are at least 6 years old. She'll need a family who has time to spend training her so that she'll be the best dog she can be when she's full-grown. With such a smart and active breed, puppy classes are a must. Spring will be about 50-pounds someday, and will need an active family who will keep her busy. Remember, adopting a puppy is a long-term commitment...you're looking at the next 15 years, so please put a lot of thought into such an important decision, and if you're ready, call Aussies & Others Rescue today. |

| Levi is a young Love Bird available for adoption from Boxers N Birds Animal Rescue. Since he was found as a stray, there's really no way to be sure of his age, but the veterinarians at Mission Animal Hospital say that they're pretty sure he's just a baby. He's a very sweet bird, especially with people he knows. Love Birds generally will bite more so than the average bird, but Levi doesn't try to bite at all. He's a bit timid when they initially take him out of his cage, but he is getting much better at being handled. Levi is in foster care and is getting a lot of attention, socialization and love. His wings have been clipped and he's in really good health. If you are interested in meeting and adopting Levi please contact Pam at BoxersNBirds@aol.com or call Mission Animal & Bird Hospital, in Oceanside, at (760) 433-3763 x224. |

| Virgil is a 2-year-old neutered male Chihuahua mix for adoption at the Escondido Humane Society. He's your typical Chihuahua with a pint-sized frame, but he’s spirited and outgoing. His foster family reports that he does well with the other small dogs in the home and loves to cuddle with people. Because of his size, he'd be a great companion for apartment dwellers, but he wouldn’t mind having a yard to play in, either. He's neutered, microchipped, vet checked, and vaccinated. If you aren’t ready to adopt, please consider fostering an animal in need. It doesn't cost you anything, and all materials and training are provided. The Escondido Humane Society Adoption Center is open from 10 a.m. to 5 p.m. seven days a week. Also, a reminder to mark your calendars for Valentine's Day Pet Portraits on February 4th from 10 a.m. to 4 p.m. at the shelter. It's a fun opportunity to create cards and memories for the animal lovers in your life! Visit EscondidoHumaneSociety.org for more details, or call 760-888-BARK. |

| Brando is a 2-year-old neutered male miniature poodle mix for adoption at the Escondido Humane Society. This spirited little guy has a lot of energy and loves to run and play, but at the end of the day he is happiest curled up in your lap. He would love to take 20-minute walks every day – he’s good on the leash – to help him burn off his energy. Brando is attending Canine Good Citizen classes at the shelter and is making good progress on his basic commands, including sit, leave it and watch me. He would love to find a family that will help him continue his training. Brando is available for adoption at the Escondido Humane Society, 3450 E. Valley Parkway. His adoption fee includes neuter, microchip, vet exam, up-to-date vaccinations and a wellness exam after adoption. If you aren’t ready to adopt, please consider fostering an animal in need. It doesn't cost you anything, and all materials are provided as well as training. For more information, call (760) 888-2275 or log on to www.escondidohumanesociety.org. | One of the best things about adopting a dog from a foster home, is that you get to save the life of a shelter pet, but someone else has already done a trial run with the dog to learn about it's personality and habits. In this case, Karma is living with a foster family who says she's an excellent dog who is already housebroken, great with other dogs, and is well-behaved around their young children. The foster mom works from home, so she is able to spend a lot of time getting to know Karma and she only has positive things to report, like how easily Karma has picked up on her basic commands! She's a 3-year-old, 60-pound Pit Bull mix and her adoption fee is only $25 for the next 5 days only. The Escondido Humane Society would also like me to remind you to call or log onto their website to learn about fostering a shelter animal, or to find out about their upcoming Valentine's Day Pet Portraits on February 4th to which you can bring your own pet. The shelter is located on East Valley Parkway, and they're open every day from 10 a.m. to 3 p.m. |
|
| Murphy is a 4-year-old neutered male American bulldog mix available for adoption at the Escondido Humane Society. Murphy has been described by more than one person at the shelter as the Best Dog Ever! It won’t take you long to see why when you first meet him. He is very gentle and friendly, and he just adores people. He is well-mannered and walks well on the leash – that’s important when you have a 73-pound dog! He also loves to play ball and romp and run. He will be a wonderful all-around companion for the right family. Mark your calendars for the Escondido Humane Society’s Valentine’s Day Pet Portraits from 10 a.m. to 4 p.m. Feb. 4. You can have your pets' photos taken in front of a festive backdrop, just in time to create Valentine's Day cards for the animal lovers in your life! | Napoleon is a 6 month old Cattle Dog/Australian Shepherd puppy, who should weigh about 35-pounds when he's full grown, a perfect size for almost any living arrangement. He's an energetic, intelligent boy who would love to share a home with another fun dog to play with. He's completely crate-trained and house broken, and he's learning how to walk nicely on a leash. He has a lovely medium-length coat that doesn't shed much. Napoleon has distinctive markings, and as is customary with his breed, he'll need a family who will keep him stimulated both physically and mentally. He's a very sweet pup who is going to be great with kids who are at least 6 years old. He may be a little to energetic for cats, though. |
|
| Dancer is a Miniature Poodle Mix and he's just 5-years old, and weighs 14-pounds. He's well-named as he knows how to dance on command! He's very affectionate and playful, but he's also mellow when it's time to call it a day. He's house trained, crate trained, good with other dogs, and loves people, too. Dancer rides well in the car, sleeps peacefully through the night on his dog bed, and he likes snuggling and going for walks. He'll do best in a home with older kids. If you're interested in adopting Dancer, please contact SPOT at SpotSavesPets.org to set up a meeting, or call 760-593-7768. And if you have an unaltered Pit Bull, call SPOT to find out how you can get your Pittie spayed or neutered for just $30 at their upcoming clinic. |

| Ava is a 4-year-old, 10-pound spayed female Chihuahua mix available for adoption from the Escondido Humane Society. This adorable, sweet little lady loves to go for walks and see new things. Ava came into the shelter a bit fearful and shy. She has since been in a foster home where she has made great progress on showing off her social side. Ava is curious about life, likes to play with toys and may be interested in a friendly doggy playmate. She is non-reactive to cats but will let out a protective bark at times when she sees strangers to let them know she is watching them. Ava is reserved when she first meets new people, but she warms up nicely once she gets to know them. She is crate trained, although she would prefer to sleep on her doggy bed. Ava is housebroken and excited to go on car rides. She loves company and will thrive with a stay-at-home parent and the ability to go places with her new parent(s). Ava is a great companion to be by your side wherever you go. Spunky and smart, Ava will keep a smile on your face and bring warmth to your heart if you choose to provide her with a loving forever home. Mark your calendars for the Escondido Humane Society’s Valentine’s Day Pet Portraits from 10 a.m. to 4 p.m. Feb. 4. | Violet is a darling 1 year old, 22-pound, beagle/pug mix, also known as a Puggle. She's great with children of all ages and loves people. She gets along wonderfully with other dogs and would do well in a home with another dog to play with. She has two doggy buddies in her foster home and they love playing with Violet. She also enjoys long walks and going hiking. She's house trained and sleeps peacefully through the night in her foster parent’s bedroom. Violet was hit by a car when she was just a puppy, and because she didn’t get proper medical attention for her jaw, it'll be slightly off-center for the rest of her life (see picture). She has no trouble at all eating, drinking, or playing with balls and toys. She has the sweetest disposition, is super smart, eager to please and gives the best kisses. Violet is spayed, current on all vaccinations, and microchipped. Contact SPOT Rescue if you’d like to meet her: www.spotsavespets.org or e-mail info@spotsavespets.org or call and leave a message 760-593-7768 Important note: SPOT is hosting a Pit Bull Spay/Neuter Day, Feb. 11th in Oceanside for just $30. Priority will be given to pit bulls and pit mixes, but if space is available other large dogs will be fixed too. |

| Gabby is a Bluetick Coon Hound, available for adoption from the El Cajon Animal Shelter. We don't see many of this breed out here, so it's a great opportunity for Bluetick fans. Her owner died, resulting in this sweet, gentle soul being brought to the shelter at the age of eight! It's tough to get a dog of that age adopted, but hopefully someone will realize that she's in the shelter by no fault of her own, and that sometimes older dogs are the best companions. Gabby is friendly with other dogs, and completely housebroken. They know for a fact that she lived with an elderly lady and was an indoor house dog. She'd also love a yard to hang out in. Typical of the hound, she does bay sometimes, so she may not be cut out for apartment living. She knows how to sit and lay down, and loves her treats. The El Cajon Animal Shelter is located at 1275 North Marshall Street, open from 10 a.m. to 5:30 p.m., Tuesday through Saturday. Gabby's ID number is 11072, and her adoption fee is just $30, and includes spay, vaccinations, microchip and health tests. |

| Chloe was found tied to a dumpster at the Cuyamaca Animal Hospital on Christmas Eve, no less. It was super cold that night out in Poway, and although Chloe was shivering from the cold and far too thin, she welcomed the staff member who found her. She's been a very good girl for her foster Mom and just needs a loving home where she'll be appreciated for the great dog that she is. She's about 3-to-4 years old now, and appears to be a Shepherd mix. She's still a bit underweight and has some hair loss on her back due to previous fleas, but she's progressing very well and is housetrained, knows some basic commands, and walks well on leash. Chloe spends her days in doggie day care and gets along with all the other dogs, but she'll need a home without cats. Chloe is vaccinated, spayed and microchipped. She's a very loving girl and would be a great companion for any family. Call Aussies & Others today to find out about Chloe, or other dogs needing foster care or adoption. |
|
| Gracie is a Corgi/Aussie mix, available for adoption from a rescue agency called Dogz In Need. She's a low-maintenance girl who's already housebroken and minds very well. They know this for a fact because she's in a foster home, which makes the transition into a permanent home so much easier on the adopters. Gracie likes to stay close to her people, and prefers a calm environment without a lot of excitement and activity. She'd do well in an adult-only home, or one with teenagers or older kids, who tend to be more calm and gentle with a dog. She does really well with smaller dogs but will also tolerate bigger ones. Cats, however, are a no no!! She takes a few minutes to warm up to people, and then she just wants to be loved. Gracie walks well on a leash and loves to go on walks. She's a wonderful dog who'd love to cuddle up with you while you're watching a movie, or hang out with you in the kitchen you while you cook dinner. If you're interested in adopting Gracie or finding out how you can get involved in fostering a pet, call Dogz In Need in the North County at 951-290-1666. |

| Geronimo is a neutered male, 4 month old black and white, domestic short hair. He's basically a little bundle of love. He was raised by a wonderful human surrogate mother along with his 2 other siblings, so he really loves and trusts people. He is litter box trained, vaccinated, dewormed, de-flead, microchipped, and tested for diseases. The National Cat Protection Society has many black and white cats now because it seems every one wants a calico or tabby-colored cat these days. If you're a senior citizen, the shelter would like to remind you that the Purina senior discount begins February 1st, so seniors can adopt cats for $25. The National Cat Protection Society is also in need of volunteers. They recently started a Student Rewards Program which teaches kids how to take care of cats at the shelter while earning medals. The program is open to elementary and high school students. For more information about adoption, or to find out about other programs, please visit the National Cat Protection Society on Birch Street in Spring Valley. |

| Kippy and Laslo are two of the cutest puppies available or adoption from Aussies & Others Dog Rescue. They're a mix of Corgi and Spaniel, and they're only 11 weeks old. They're in a foster home where they have already been house-trained and crate trained which is a huge bonus for the lucky adopters. Kippy and Laslo are both great with other dogs, and they have the sweetest personalities you could ask for. According to their foster family, they're super smart with very inquisitive little minds and have been really easy to train. They will remain relatively small dogs, and will be perfect for a small home, condo, a place with a small backyard, or someone who needs a companion to travel with them in an RV. Lots of lap-time suits them just fine. If you're interested in finding out more about one of these puppies, or if you'd like to learn about becoming a foster family for a dog in need, please call Aussies & Others today. |
|
| Peanut is a 3 year old Chihuahua available for adoption from Boxers N Birds Animal Rescue. He was relinquished by a family that had fallen on hard times and could no longer keep him or his brother, Oreo, a Yorkie-Poo. Peanut has been available for adoption for about 4 months and he's come a long way in that time. He used to be so scared and protective of his brother, but he's really coming out of his shell. He likes other dogs, big and small, and he walks very nicely on a leash. He can take a little bit of time to warm up to you but once he does, he is your best friend and he loves to be held. Peanut is in good health, microchipped, neutered and just looking for his forever home. If you're interested in meeting Peanut, please e-mail Pam at BoxersNBirds@aol.com or call Mission Animal & Bird Hospital, in Oceanside, at (760) 433-3763 x224. |

| Silk is a beautiful 2-year-old spayed female Pit Bull mix available for adoption through the Escondido Humane Society's foster program. She's a tenacious young dog with lots of energy to burn. She loves to chase tennis balls and will retrieve as many as you'll throw for her. When she is tired from playing, she likes to sit next to her people for some bonding time. She especially enjoys a nice belly rub. Silk has been participating in the canine good citizen dog training at the shelter and knows sit, down, stay, and leave it. The shelter would prefer to find her a home where she is the only dog in the family because she doesn't really like to share her toys. The Escondido Humane Society is located at 3450 E. Valley Parkway, open every day from 10-to-5. For more information on adoption specials or fostering one of the hundreds of pets for adoption at the shelter, go to EscondidoHumaneSociety.org. |
|
| Minnie is a 12-year-old spayed female Miniature Pinscher mix available for adoption from the Escondido Humane Society. Minnie is currently living in a wonderful foster home where she loves to lounge on her foster guardians’ laps and spend time with their other small dog. Before going into foster care, Minnie participated in the Humane Society’s Canine Good Citizen classes. She is living proof that you "CAN teach an old dog new tricks!" She seemed to absolutely love being in class, and best of all, she already knows a lot of her basic manners and obedience commands. Minnie may be up in years a little bit, but she has plenty of energy and zest for life. She certainly deserves a forever home to provide her with love and creature comforts. In return she will be a wonderful, loving companion to the lucky family that brings her home! Minnie is available for adoption from the Escondido Humane Society, 3450 E. Valley Parkway. If you aren’t ready to adopt, please consider fostering an animal in need. It doesn't cost you anything, and all materials are provided as well as training. For more information, call (760) 888-2275 or log on to www.escondidohumanesociety.org. The Escondido Humane Society Adoption Center is open from 10 a.m. to 5 p.m. seven days a week. |

| Elmer is a 3 year old Chihuahua, available for adoption from the El Cajon Animal Shelter. He's just one of many Chihuahuas pouring into our local shelters and rescues as it's one of the most over-bred breeds of dogs today. It's a numbers game, and unfortunately, there just aren't enough homes for all the Chihuahuas. Elmer was brought into the shelter in mid-December as a stray, and his family never came for him. He's so quiet and well-behaved in his kennel, that everyone just walks past him and never notices that he's there. He's a bit shy, but once he gets to know you, he loves to be held. He does really well with other animals, but because of his shyness, they'd like to see him in an adult-only household. He'll make a great lap-dog for the right person. The El Cajon Animal Shelter is located at 1275 North Marshall Street, open from 10 a.m. to 5:30 p.m., Tuesday through Saturday. His animal ID number is 10920, and the adoption fee includes neutering, vaccinations, microchip and health tests. |
|
| Lena is a 15 month old, 8-pound Chihuahua who is already house trained and crate trained, she also doesn't bark much, and she knows how to use a doggie door. She's a very special little girl who came into the shelter system with a severely deformed front leg from an old injury that had never been treated. The leg was amputated which has not slowed her down a bit. She can jump in bed with you for a nap, she jumps on the couch for a movie, and she has no problem getting into the car for a trip to the dog park. She gets along great with all her foster brothers and sisters and is very patient with the puppies who like to cuddle with her. She is a very well behaved little dog who would love a home with someone who will appreciate how wonderful she is. She's just a wonderful little companion and would be an asset to any family or individual looking for a buddy. Call Aussies & Others today to find out more about adoption or fostering. |
|
| Gordy is a 9 year old, 10-pound, a Chihuahua mix available for adoption from the Escondido Humane Society. He's currently in a loving foster home where his guardians report that he's a well-behaved dog who is easy going, and a pleasure to have around. Gordy loves playing with the other female Chihuahua in the house. He's housebroken, crate-trained, mellow, quiet and just loves to be close to his family...plus he travels well in the car. Gordy is already neutered, fully vaccinated, microchipped, de wormed and de fleaed. A free exam is provided at a vets office after adoption. Please contact the Escondido Humane Society at 760-888-2247 for more info. They're located at 3450 East Valley Parkway in Escondido, open 7 days a week from 10-to-5. | Minnie is a fun-loving dog currently in a loving foster care home in Escondido. She's one happy-go-lucky dog. She loves to play fetch with a ball, enjoys to swim in the pool, and is a pleasure to walk with in the neighborhood. Minnie is crate trained, potty trained, and knows her basic commands. She would do best in an active home, and Minnie would do fine in a home with older sturdy children. Minnie is spayed, fully vaccinated, micro chipped, de wormed and de fleaed. She has been behavior tested. A free wellness check up is provided at a local vet's office within two weeks of her adoption. The dog license is included in the adoption fee if you live in San Marcos, Poway, or Escondido. If Minnie is not the dog for you, there are many other animals that are waiting for their forever home. Also, please consider fostering an animal in need, all materials and training are provided. |
|
| Britta is a 2 year old, female Retriever mix available for adoption from Chesapeake Bay Retriever Rescue. She's been in a foster home for a really long time, because most people call Chessie Rescue for that specific breed, and it's hard for them to talk someone into a different breed when they already know what they want. So this TV spot today brings us hope that while we weren't able to make her Christmas wishes come true, maybe we'll find her a family of her own in the New Year! Britta is a darling, happy girl who was found playing with kids in a canal out in Yuma with severe burns on her back. She had to undergo painful surgery this past year to remove some of the scar tissue and help in the healing process. She's a friendly, intelligent, energetic girl who loves to play with other dogs and meet new people. She especially loves children and would love nothing more than to snuggle with a new family and receive lots of love. She'd thrive in an active environment. She has a strong retrieving drive and can out-run any dog at the park! She recently started agility training, and has proven to be a star. With continued training, she'll be quite the competitor in dog sports. Call Chesapeake Bay Retriever Rescue today, and be sure to help us spread the word and find her a home! |
|
| What Goose wants most is a family of his own, and he'd even be good in a family with young kids. Goose is a Chesapeake Bay Retriever who's compact for his breed at just 55 pounds. Like most Chessies, he loves the water and he's a hit at the beach. He's charming, and will keep a family in laughing all the time - he has this habit of reaching his paw high up over his head like he's waving when someone he knows approaches him. He doesn't possess the hard headedness most Chessies are known for, which is why he's great with kids. He likes to ride in the car and he's crate-trained. Goose has been passed over for adoption for a year because he may have hip issues when he's older. You certainly wouldn't know it, to see him playing in his yard and leaping into the waves. They took him to the best orthopedic vet in town who said his condition can be maintained with proper weight control and moderate exercise, which he seems just fine with! Call Chesapeake Bay Retriever Rescue for more info or visit CBRRescue.org. |
|
| Lou is a 6 year old Smooth Coat Chihuahua. He is a little man weighing less than 8 lbs. Lou has been neutered, is now in good health and lives in foster care with other dogs and cats. | On Monday we featured TWO older Labrador Retriever PUPPIES who would LOVE to wake up in a family on Christmas morning! Both are available for adoption from Labradors & Friends Dog Rescue, though they do not need to be adopted together. They are simply being fostered together, so it seemed like a great opportunity to show both at the same time. |
|
| Shorty is a 12-pound bundle of fun! This 8-month-old puppy is available for adoption from Aussies & Others Dog Rescue, and he'll keep you entertained for hours with his goofy antics. He throws his own toys in the air and runs in circles before catching them. He keeps his foster family laughing non-stop! He's the first one to start the "Chase Me" game with the other dogs in the household, but he's also cuddly and loves to be in your lap when it's time to rest. He's a busy little guy who will require regular exercise. He loves going on walks, playing with other dogs, and riding in the car. He's also crate-trained. Aussies & Others would love to find this little puppy a family of his own by Christmas morning. So please give them a call today. Even if you're not ready to adopt, think about fostering a dog until a forever family can be found. You'll be saving a life and doing something that'll make you feel wonderful long after the holidays are over. |
|
| Giselle, or Elle for short, is a black Lab available for adoption from Labradors & Friends Dog Rescue. She's in a foster home where a family is really getting to know all about her, so that they can share that with the new adopters. For example, they know Giselle is already housebroken and knows her basic commands, like "sit", "stay" and "speak". She enjoys her walks and does well on a leash. She's very treat motivated for easy training and loves to ride in the car. She doesn't have any food or toy aggression, and overall, she's just a very sweet and gentle dog. She's even good with children, and loves to curl up near her people. Giselle's crate trained, and an all-around wonderful companion. She needs to be introduced slowly to other dogs, but eventually she does fine with them, in fact, she and her foster brother Banbino love to cuddle and play together. This holiday season, please save the life of a dog from a legitimate rescue organization or shelter before even considering buying a dog from a store. Contact Labradors & Friends today for more information. |

| We have double the cuteness and double the fun! Checkers is a spunky 4-year-old neutered terrier mix, and his best friend is Domino, a 6-year-old neutered male Chihuahua mix. Checkers hasn’t been at the shelt er long, but he’s already won over the hearts of staff and volunteers at EHS. He is known for his sweet, loving nature, and his adorable terrier face is hard to resist as well! Domino has a very happy-go-lucky personality. This sweet guy effortlessly wins over just about every human he meets. They have become very bonded at the shelter, and must find a home together, which makes it challenging to find them a home, as most people aren't looking to add two dogs at once. Domino and Checkers are available for adoption from the Escondido Humane Society, 3450 E. Valley Parkway. Their $170 adoption fee for both dogs includes neuter, microchip, vet exam, up-to-date vaccinations and a wellness exam after adoption. | ||||

| Oreo is a 3 year old Yorkshire Terrier. He is a wonderful little guy who loves other dogs...big and small...and is very good in his crate. He sleeps like a baby at night and seems to be housebroken. Oreo can be a little shy when you first meet him, but once he warms up to you he will be your best friend for life. He is good with children but, again, needs a slow introduction. He walks nicely on a leash. |

| Danny is a beautiful long haired, white cat, with beautiful blue eyes. He's 6 years young and loves to be around people! He gets along well with other cats, but he can often be found in the front office so that he can get even more attention from people. Danny has tested negative for diseases, is vaccinated, microchipped, and neutered. His adoption fee is only $75. All adoptions come with a free vet visit within 10 days of adoption. Friends of Cats is a no-kill shelter in El Cajon dedicated to providing shelter and medical care to abandoned cats and those whose owners are unable to care for them. The Shelter houses over 300 cats at any given time. About half of the cats at the shelter are adoptable and are looking to find their new home. Friends of Cats is also a sanctuary for cats that are terminally ill, considered unadoptable, or whose owners have arranged for their continued lifetime care. Volunteers are the backbone of the shelter, and are needed throughout the year for a variety of daily activities such as cat socializing, groundskeeping, and daily housekeeping tasks. Friends of Cats is located at 15587 Olde Highway 80 in El Cajon, just east of Lake Jennings Park Road and is open Tuesday through Sunday from 10:00am-3:30pm for adoption. |

| Chief is a wonderful 6-year-old, 33-pound Border Collie/Australian Shepherd mix. He's a perfect little gentleman being fostered by a shelter volunteer, but he really needs a permanent home and family of his own. His foster family says he's sweet, affectionate and very smart. Of course, that's to be expected when you're dealing with a combination of two brilliant breeds. He's very happy and mild-mannered, with an overall easy-go-lucky disposition. With the exception of being a little protective of his food bowl, he gets along great with other dogs. He loves to play with squeaky toys and chew on rawhide bones. He's also completely housebroken. Unfortunately, Chief has not had an easy life so far. He came into the shelter with a shotgun bullet in his back end, and a crushed pelvis, so he walks with a bit of a limp, but this doesn't slow him down a bit, and he loves going on walks with his foster mom. They're holding out for a very special home this boy, because he deserves to finally be surrounded by good people! If you're interested in finding out more about Chief, call our friend Becky with Aussies & Others today. |

| Daisy is a 2-year-old spayed female pit bull mix available for adoption at the Escondido Humane Society, but she's fortunate enough to be in one of their temporary foster homes, where the foster family has gotten to know her very well. Daisy is a good-natured girl with a sense of humor. She recently passed her AKC Canine Good Citizen Test. That means she's acquired the skills and good manners to be a community member in good standing and a very reliable family dog. Her fun-loving personality would thrive in an active household. Hiking in nature and splashing in her swimming pool are some of her favorite activities. She also enjoys a good cuddle. Daisy rides very well in the car and would like nothing better than to be your companion wherever you go and whatever you do! Her adoption fee is just $25 though the end of October. She's spayed, microchipped, vet checked and vaccinated. The shelter is open every day from 10 a.m. to 5 p.m. |

| Little Angel is a 9 year old female chihuahua available for adoption through the Escondido Humane Society's Foster Care Program. Little Angel's foster guardian reports that she is a delight to have around, bonds very quickly to people, and loves to spend in a comfy lap. She's very tiny at only 6 pounds, and she is not a big eater. She's crate trained, and loves to snuggle up in her doggie blankets and bed. She is in a home with another chihuahua, and enjoys having a small buddy around. She'd probably do best in a quiet, calm home. Little Angel is already spayed, behavior tested, fully vaccinated, micro chipped, de wormed and de fleaed. She also comes with a free vet exam to use after adoption. Even her dog license may be included. If Little Angel isn't the dog for you, please visit EscondidoHumaneSociety.org for info on more animals. Or if you can't adopt right now, please foster a dog in need. It doesn't cost anything and all training and materials provided. The shelter is open 7 days a week from 10 to 5, at 3450 East Valley Parkway in Escondido. Please contact the foster coordinator on her cell, at 760-594-7605 to schedule a time to meet Little Angel or call the shelter directly at 760-888-BARK. |

| Emily is a sweet 2 year old Labrador/Shepherd mix who was rescued by Lab & Friends from a high-kill shelter, where she and her 11 puppies were scheduled to be killed. Emily is a sweet, affectionate dog who loves to give hugs and just hang out with her people. She's quiet, but will bark when strangers approach the house. She'll be a great addition to any family. Eight of the eleven puppies survived, and they are available for adoption, as well. But for those who don't want the high-maintenance of a puppy....Emily is the perfect answer! |

| Harold is a beautiful medium-haired cat available for adoption from the Friends of Cats shelter in El Cajon. He has a hint of tabby coloring, making him look almost peach-colored, with giant bold blue eyes. He was left behind in the shelter's parking lot by a homeless person, who just dropped him and walked off. Probably a good time to remind everyone that abandoning a pet, even in a shelter parking lot, is illegal. Harold will be a treasure for some lucky family....not only because of his beauty, but because he's just a big, sweet guy....weighing in at 19-pounds, he's bigger than some of the dogs we feature. Harold is 10 yrs old, which is going to make it a little tough to find him a home, but remember that a healthy indoor cat can live 18-20 years! He loves catnip, treats (obviously), and playing with the laser light pen...pretty playful for such a big boy. A quick reminder that Friends of Cats is holding their annual Open House in September, including lots of activities for kids, and kitten races which are always a big hit. |

| Trixie is a 20-year-old, California Desert Tortoise, available for adoption from the San Diego Turtle & Tortoise Society. She's pretty much full-grown, and she has a life expectancy of 100 years....so she may be around for another 80 years....becoming a living family heirloom, and a long-term commitment. 90-percent of a Tortoise's diet is simply grass and weeds. They also like to eat romaine lettuce, rose petals, hibiscus flowers, leaves and cactus. Tortoises don't swim, but do they do require water to drink. Turtles and Tortoises make great pets because they're great outdoor pets that require less care than a dog or cat, plus they're a good choice for families with allergies to other animals. They're smart and fun to watch. The California Desert Tortoise is a federally protected animal. They're legal to own, but not legal to remove from or return to the desert. They're available from the San Diego Turtle and Tortoise Society as long as you can provide a safe and secure area, preferably without other animals, and they do well in a space that is at least 16 x 20 with grass and weeds to eat. |

| Meg is a beautiful Australian shepherd mix with a beautiful dark red brindle coat, who found herself without a family after her owner died recently. She weighs 45-pounds and has been living with a foster family who has four other dogs and she gets along well with all of them. They say she she scans the perimeter of the property looking for critters who try to get into the yard. She leads the pack when running for a tennis ball, and though she would never hurt anyone, she's a great watch dog who will be sure to let you know when someone comes to the front door. Meg is crate-trained, housebroken, and knows her basic commands. She'd be a great companion for a family with or without another dog. She loves lying around in the evening watching the television with her family. Please call Becky with Aussies & Others Dog Rescue to find out about adopting this fabulous girl or fostering a dog in need. |

| If you need some inspiration for the day, meet D.J., a 6-year-old Chihuahua. who's missing his front two limbs, and doesn't let it slow him down a bit. He was born without front legs, and recently lost his home and family...a family who originally rescued him from a breeder who planned to drown him because of his disability. He's a loving, happy dog with tons of spirit. Everyone who meets him comments on how smart he is. He'll bump your water bottle to show you that he's thirsty, and he stands upright on two legs. He gets around well, plays, and snuggles like any other dog. He rides along in a carry bag, and loves to meet new people. He's thriving in his foster home and they say he's the perfect pet. Recently an animal-loving retired physician built D.J. a cart so that he'll have wheels to get around even more efficiently. D.J. is one-of-a-kind, and he needs a special new family who will love and appreciate his uniqueness and joyful spirit. Call Chihuahua Rescue of San Diego today to find out about adopting D.J., or to learn about fostering a dog in need. |

| Rosie and Sumo are part of a litter of kittens who were thrown away and found in a trash can by a volunteer of the National Cat Protection Society. Rosie is a female calico and Sumo is a male black and white. Sumo wasn't breathing when the volunteer found him, so she gave him CPR and finally brought the little guy back to life. A surrogate hand-raised them until they were healthy, so they're very bonded to people. They have medium to long coats. All four of the kittens from this litter are litter box trained, spayed and neutered, microchiped, dewormed, flea treated, tested for diseases and fully vaccinated. They'll be available at the end of the month, but you can fill out an application now. The National Cat Protection Society is located in Spring Valley on Birch Street. |

| Fanny is one of a group of Chihuahuas affectionately call the "Bare Naked Ladies" because they were absolutely bald when they first came to the rescue organization. They're all about 2-3 years old, and they've spent the majority of the last year in a shelter or rescue environment. With all the love and attention they've received, they're very social, affectionate Chihuahuas. Fanny and her sisters had a skin infection and mange, which caused the hair loss. But they've been treated for both conditions, and are now growing the softest, most gorgeous red/blond fur you could ever imagine. They're on a hypoallergenic diet as well as supplements for skin and hair, and it really makes a huge difference! Ideally, BoxersNBirds Animal Rescue would love to adopt out these ladies in pairs, if possible, since they've been together as a group for so long. Fanny races around the house looking for toys, she loves her toys and would give her right leg to have a lap to lounge on!If you are looking for love and a great lap-dog, you have to meet Fanny and the rest of the Bare Naked Ladies! For more info, e-mail BoxersNBirds@aol.com or call Mission Animal and Bird Hospital at 760-433-3763 Ext 224 and leave a message for Pam or Lisa and they will return your call as soon as possible. |

| Harry is a 60-pound, 3-year-old, neutered male Pittie, available for adoption from the Escondido Humane Society. He attended the Cupids & Canines Adoption Event, and though he was an angel, nobody noticed or adopted him. He's a really nice, smart dog. He's housebroken, crate-trained, and he's completing a canine good citizen class where he loves all the other dogs and people. He knows his basic commands, and he's learning how to walk on a leash without pulling. Harry's the perfect passenger in the car, either sticking his nose into the breeze, or laying his head on your lap as you drive. He's a good hiking and running partner. His adoption fee includes vaccinations, deworking, defleaing, microchip, free vet check and classes with Hidden Valley Obedience Club of Escondido. If Harry isn't the pet for you, check out EscondidoHumaneSociety.org to see hundreds of pets for adoption. You're bound to find the love of your life. And if the timing isn't right for you, call to find out about becoming a temporary foster home for an animal....it doesn't cost you anything to foster...food and supplies are covered! |

| Valentino is a 15 year old Desert Tortoise who is expected to live to 100 years of age. He's an active, friendly guy who really likes to move around, so he needs at least a 20-by-20 foot space to explore. For the most part, tortoises are easy to maintain, and require minimal care. Valentino eats 90-percent natural grasses and weeds, along with romaine lettuce if you don't have grass. He also likes roses, hibiscus, and cactus. Desert tortoises hibernate from November to March or April. He needs a secure outside area, with no other tortoises or dogs, and a little "dog house" or shelter to sleep in, with plants and a water dish to drink from. He's had a health exam, and he's even microchipped, just like a cat or dog would be. When you adopt from the San Diego Turtle & Tortoise Society, they provide all the support and education you'll ever need to set up a living space for your new family member. If you'd like to know more about what's involved in caring for a turtle or tortoise, then check out their informative website at SDTurtle.org. |

| Check out the beautiful "guy liner" around this handsome boy's eyes. Whitey is a 53-pound Pittie mix from the Escondido Humane Society. He's been available for adoption for 3 months and currently lives in a foster home until a permanent family adopts him. His foster mom says he's a very quiet, happy dog who is crate trained and sleeps quietly on his doggie bed. He'll alert you when he needs to go outside, and he loves his belly rubs. He wiggles on his back and has an ear to ear smile. He loves to play with his doggie toys, and knows how to fetch. He's not a barker, and seems content with his life. Over all, he's a very submissive dog, and a pleasure to have around. Like all dogs from the Escondido Humane Society, Whitey is neutered, fully vaccinated, de-wormed, de-fleaed and microchipped. He comes with a free vet check and his foster mom is throwing in a Christmas gift basket full of treats and toys. If you're interested in Whitey, or finding out about adopting or fostering any of the other 500-plus animals for adoption at the Escondido Humane Society, call Julie directly on her cell number, or go to EscondidoHumaneSociety.org to see pictures of all the animals. They're open 7 days a week, from 10 a.m. to 5 p.m., and will only be closed on Christmas Day starting at noon, and if you want to call the shelter directly, it's 760-888-BARK. |

| Yogi Bear has been available for adoption since June, when he was brought to the Escondido Humane Society as a stray, but luckily for him, he's in a temporary foster home for the time being. He's a special needs pet, with limited vision, but his foster mom says he's a sweet guy, who gets along with other dogs in the home, enjoys playing with them, as well as stretching out in the cool grass and enjoying the sunshine. Other than his vision, he's completely healthy and ready to join a new family who will be accepting of his disability. He's housetrained, crate trained, fully vaccinated, micro chipped, de wormed, de fleaed, and comes with a free health check after adoption. Please contact the Escondido Humane Society's foster care coordinator, Julie, on her cell at 760-445-9047 for immediate information about Yogi Bear. If Yogi's not the dog for you, there are countless dogs and puppies for adoption at the shelter, so visit EscondidoHumane.org to see pictures of available animals. Please consider saving a life this holiday season. The shelter is located at 3450 E. Valley Parkway in Escondido, and because they're so crowded with adoptable pets, they remain open 7 days a week, from 10 a.m. to 5 p.m. You can call the shelter at 760-888-BARK for more information. |

| Baby is an 11-year-old spayed female who is available for adoption from the Friends of Cats Shelter in El Cajon. She's spayed, current on all her vaccinations, tested negative for feline diseases, microchipped and comes with a free vet visit and carrier if needed. Her fee is only $35 because she's more than 10 years old, and the shelter knows it's a challenge to find adopters for pets this age. In fact, most shelters wouldn't even accept Baby because of her age. But remember, when properly cared for and kept indoors, cats can live to 20-years. Baby has been at the shelter for almost a year, and is so incredibly lovable. She's great with other cats, and could be placed in a home with or without kids. She likes to lick, she loves to have her back scratched and her belly rubbed. Taking care of cats, like Baby, is what Friends of Cats has been doing for the past 81 years. |

| Bubba is a 15-year-old, African Sulcata Tortoise. He weighs 35 pounds now, but he'll grow to be 150 to 200 pounds as he gets older. His life expectancy is 100 years, so, he very well may outlive us all. The requirements for adoption are a 20 X 20 foot area, and a heated house, like a dog house, because they need a warmer environment, being from Africa. They need to be kept outdoors, and they love to graze on Bermuda grass, grass hay, hibiscus, cactus and rose blossoms. There's a $25 membership requirement to the San Diego Turtle & Tortoise Society, but otherwise there isn't an adoption fee. Of course, you need a family committed to caring for him, and possibly passing him on to the next generation. |
As featured on San Diego 6's ANIMAL HOUSE!Name: Leilani Breed: Pit Bull mix Age: 2 years Sex: Spayed Female Organization: Pit Bull Rescue San Diego Phone: (858) 693-7331 |
Lelani was originally a stray who wound up at the shelter and caught the eye of a volunteer who called Pit Bull Rescue to pull her from the shelter and place her in a foster home, where she currently resides. She gets along with the other dogs and puppies....in fact, she's currently living with three other dogs. She's housebroken, crate trained, knows her basic commands, very affectionate and while she has a medium energy level, she's also pretty content just snoozing in front of the television with her people. She loves to play with her basketball, and is always up for a good game of tug. As with all legitimate rescue agencies, Pit Bull Rescue spays, neuters, fully vaccinates and micro-chips all dogs before they're adopted...so you have the confidence of adopting from a group who has been around for a long time in this community. |
