| Upcoming Event: Cupids and Canines Valentine's Day Dog Adoption Event! Sunday, February 14, 2010 11am to 3 pm. Checkout our Events Page for more information! |
CLICK HERE to see Arwain on SAN DIEGO 6 ANIMAL HOUSE!Name: Arwain Breed: Pit Bull/Mastiff Age: 8 months old Sex: Neutered Male Organization: Pit Bull Rescue, San Diego Phone: (858) 361-3592 |
| Arwain is available for adoption through Pit Bull Rescue, San Diego, and he'll be at the Cupids & Canines Valentine's Day Adoption Event this Sunday, February 14th. He's a Pittie puppy, possibly mixed with some Mastiff, but it's really a guess at this point. At 8 months of age, he's already 60-pounds and growing. He could get to be 100-pounds or more....but for those of us who love big dogs, it's just more to love! And just because he'll be big, doesn't mean he needs a big yard....lots of big dogs prefer to be indoors with the family, and from what I understand, he's a big couch potato! He's living with a good foster family who has already taught him commands, and how to stand by the door when he needs to go outside and do his business. He also has a brother named Bluto who he absolutely loves to play with. He'd do best in a home with another dog to play with, or a family who will take him to the off-leash dog parks to be socialized and exercised. Arwain and 100 other adoptable dogs will be available for adoption this Sunday at the Dunk N Dogs Dog Wash on Clairemont Drive in Bay Park from 11 to 3 p.m. Come meet the dogs and the people who rescue them. Even if you don't want to adopt, come find out how you can become a volunteer or foster home for a dog in need. If you want to get an application filled our right away for Arwain, go to PBRSD.org and get started even before the weekend event! |
CLICK HERE to see Amor on SAN DIEGO 6 ANIMAL HOUSE (and HERE to see Ammo and Ferrari on KUSI GOOD MORNING SAN DIEGO)!Name: Amor (Spayed Female), Ammo (Neutered Male) and Ferrari (Neutered Male) Breed: Chihuahua mix puppy Age: 10 weeks old Organization: Camp Pendleton Animal Shelter Phone: (760) 725-8120 |
| Amor (featured on San Diego 6 animal house) and her brother Ammo (featured on KUSI Good Morning San Diego along with Ferrari), are Patriotic Pets who are available for immediate adoption from the Camp Pendleton Animal Shelter, which is located on the base in the North County. Often the pets at the base are left behind when military members are deployed, and don't have family in San Diego. The shelter is open to the public, and adoption hours are normally Thursday through Sunday from 10 a.m. to 5 p.m., however, they will accept inquiries about the pups today, because we're featuring them on TV. Keep in mind that as cute as this puppy is, Chihuahuas rarely make excellent pets for small children, due to their delicate build. But if you're an adult household, or have older, gentle children, you should consider adopting Amor. If the puppies aren't adopted this week, they, and about 100 other adoptable dogs will be available THIS SUNDAY, at the 4th Annual Cupids & Canines Valentine's Day Adoption Event, from 11 a.m. to 3 p.m. in Bay Park, at the Dunk N Dogs Self-Serve Dog Wash at 30-56 Clairemont Dr. You can download a flyer at SDShelters.com or call me directly for more information about the event. There'll be about 15 local shelter and rescue organizations at this event, so come meet the dogs, and find out how you can become a volunteer or foster for one of these great organizations. |
CLICK HERE to see Tilly on SAN DIEGO 6 ANIMAL HOUSE!Name: Tilly Breed: Greyhound Age: 5.5 years Sex: Spayed Female Organization: Greyhound Adoption Center Phone: (877) HOUNDSAVERS |
| Tilly is a 5.5 year old, red and white, purebred Greyhound who was brought to the Greyhound Adoption Center after her career ended at the Caliente Greyhound Racetrack. She had a full racing career, and is a little more mature than other ex-racing greyhounds at the center. Remember, however, that just because they spend their early years racing, that doesn't mean they're active dogs. Once they retire, Greyhounds are known for being big, gentle couch potatoes. Great housedogs! Tilly is very affectionate with people, so they call her the “Velcro dog” at the shelter. She can be a little bossy with other female dogs, and shouldn't be placed with small animals...but she is a great traveler. Like all dogs from Greyhound Adoption Center, she'll be spayed before adoption, plus she's up to date on all her shots. She's in excellent health, and the shelter evaluates all dogs for temperament and personality before matching them to a perfect family. If you're interested in adopting a Greyhound, come to their Open House on Valentine's Day, Sunday, February 14th, from 1 to 3 p.m. at the Greyhound Adoption Center, located at 4821 Dehesa Rd. in El Cajon. If you want to volunteer or adopt a Greyhound, their phone number is easy to remember: it's 877-HOUNDSAVERS |
CLIICK HERE to see Hopper on SAN DIEGO 6 ANIMAL HOUSE!Name: Hopper Breed: Terrier mix Age: 3 years old Sex: Neutered Male Organization: El Cajon Animal Shelter (1275 N. Marshall, two blocks north of Fletcher Parkway) Phone: (619) 441-1580 X9 Hours: 10 a.m. to 5 p.m. Tues-Sat Email: DHutchin@ci.el-cajon.ca.us |
| Hopper is a 3 year old, scruffy terrier mix. He's got movie-star good looks and a fabulous personality. Plus, he's the perfect size, weighing in at just over 20-pounds. He wound up in the El Cajon Animal Shelter as a stray, and nobody ever came to claim him. He's very friendly and smart, he sits and knows how to shake, and he appears to be housebroken. He does just fine with other dogs, and with his great temperament, they're guessing he's good with children, as well. He'll need a family who has a home with a fenced-in back yard so he can run and play. Hopper's adoption fee is only $65, and that includes the cost of neutering him, plus he's been microchipped and fully vaccinated. The El Cajon Animal Shelter is located on North Marshall Street, about two blocks north of Fletcher Parkway, and they're open from 10 a.m. to 5 p.m. Tuesday through Saturday. If Hopper isn't the dog for you, then check out all the other dogs and cats they have who need good homes! |
These dogs are available for adoption from the Escondido Humane Society, 760-888-BARK. We'd be delighted to see them adopted after their television appearances... if not, they will all be at the Cupids & Canines Valentine's Day Adoption Event. | ||

CLIICK HERE to see Mo on SAN DIEGO 6 ANIMAL HOUSE!
Name: Mo Breed: Terrier mix Age: 12 weeks old Sex: Neutered Male Organization: Aussies & Others Rescue Phone: (619) 469-3748 |
| Mo is an adorable terrier mix, who looks like a miniatue yellow Labrador Retriever. He's about 12 weeks old now, and loves to play chase with his dog friends...he's very well socialized. He also loves to play in water. He likes playing with the big dogs, and he even met some horses recently, and wasn't afraid. He's very cuddly and knows how to use a doggie door, and is already housebroken. He's crate trained, but really prefers to sleep in the bed with everyone else! He's a terrier mix and weighs about 7 pounds now, but might grow to be about 15-to-18 pounds. Mo is just the cutest little gentleman! If you're interested in adopting him now, he's available for adoption from one of my favorites, Aussies & Others Rescue. If he isn't adopted after this segment, he'll be at the Gigantic Cupids & Canines Valentine's Day Adoption Event in Bay Park with about 100 other dogs, but we really hope that someone will call on him today. Call Becky with Aussies & Others at 619-469-37-48. |
CLIICK HERE to see Charlie Chan on SAN DIEGO 6 ANIMAL HOUSE!
Name: Charlie Chan Breed: Chow Chow Age:10 years old Sex: Neutered Male Organization: Escondido Humane Society Phone: (760) 594-7605 |
| Charlie Chan is a really sweet Chow Chow who we featured some time ago. He was finally adopted by an 80-year-old woman, and we really thought it would be the perfect match, since he's an older gentleman, himself...but as it turns out, she felt he had a little too much energy for her. He is a really healthy boy, who loved playing in a big back yard with the other two dogs in his previous foster home, He's house-trained, crate-trained and doesn't bark. He may be a little hard of hearing, but he's a perfectly behaved dog. I don't want to give the impression that because he's 10, he doesn't like playing or going on walks, and that he just wants to lay around the house all day long. He really is in good shape, mentally and physically, and he needs someone who can get out there and take him for a hike, or an hour at the dog park. He's already neutered, microchipped, de-wormed, de-flead, and comes with a free vet check up after adoption. His adoption fee is only $55 because he's a senior. When Charlie was returned to the shelter, his previous foster home was no longer available, so now, he's stuck in a kennel again. So today, we're asking that even if you aren't interested in adopting Charlie, please consider calling to learn how you can provide a temporary foster home for this good boy. Call the Escondido Humane Society's foster care coordinator today, or you can reach someone at the shelter at 760-888-BARK. The shelter is located on East Valley Parkway, and has hundreds of dogs and cats for adoption every day! |
CLIICK HERE to see Lovie on SAN DIEGO 6 ANIMAL HOUSE!
Name: Lovie Breed: Chihuahua Age: 2.5 years Sex: Spayed Female Organization: Chihuahua Rescue of San Diego Phone: (858) 277-3557 |
| Lovie was a breeder's dog who has spent the better part of her 2.5 years in a cage, either pregnant, or nursing her puppies. She loves the attention of humans, and really loves to be held and cuddled. She's super happy, sweet, and very generous with her kisses. She's full grown and weighs 6 pounds. She's now spayed, fully vaccinated, and ready for a lap of her own. She's currently living in a Chihuahua Rescue foster home, where they are teaching her how to use piddle pads, and she's learning very well, but she'll need a new owner who will be patient and continue working with her on becoming an indoor, family dog. For more information on adopting or fostering a Chihuahua in need, visit RescueAChihuahua.com or call 858-277-3557. |
CLIICK HERE to see Noel on KUSI GOOD MORNING SAN DIEGO!
Name: Noel Breed: Toy Poodle Weight: 3.5 pounds Sex: Spayed Female Organization: Chihuahua Rescue of San Diego Phone: (858) 277-3557 Website: RescueAChuhuahua.com |
| Noel was in the shelter before Christmas, in bad shape, needing all of her teeth pulled due to a terrible infection that was going to probably kill her if nothing was done. Rescues are the organizations that will sometimes take dogs who need medical care out of the shelters, as these dogs are not considered adoptable by shelter standards. CRofSD had a full dental done on Noel, where as all of her teeth had to be extracted. She was also treated for other medical needs and now she is ready for her forever home. After the blood tests showed her internal functions to be normal the vet thinks she has many good years left in her. She is 3 1/2 pounds of fluff and love. She would do best in a quiet senior home where she could watch KUSI news and then go for a nice walk. Her foster Mom said that she is pretty close to perfect. Please call 858-277-3557 for more info on how to adopt Noel. |
CLIICK HERE to see Tyson on SAN DIEGO 6 ANIMAL HOUSE!
Name: Tyson Breed: Pit Bull Age: 5 years old Sex: Neutered Male Organization: It's The Pits Dog Rescue Phone: (858) 484-0985 |
| Tyson is a very sweet 5-year-old, blue & white Pit Bull who loves tummy rubs. He's great with other dogs and loves to run and play. He's equally happy plopping down on the floor to chew on his Nyla Bone, or cuddling up for a good belly rub. He loves children of all ages, and he's house-trained and crate-trained. He likes to ride in the car, too. He's well behaved in the house, and will do well in just about any family situation, as long as there isn't a cat in the home. He's been fully vaccinated, neutered and microchipped for identification. He's just one of the many Pitties available for adoption from It's The Pits Dog Rescue, and if you like the Blue Pits, like Tyson, they have several needing to be placed in good, responsible homes. Call, or visit their website at It'sThePits.org for an adoption application. By the way, some important news for all Pit Bull owners: This Saturday, January 30th, the Spay Neuter Action Project is holding a low cost spay/neuter day for any low income families who have Pit Bulls or Pit mixes. You abolutely must have an appointment in order to have your Pittie spayed or neutered for only $20. If you don't live near Oceanside, you should still call to find out when they'll have the SNAP van in your area....but this Saturday is especially for Pit Bulls. Call 619-525-3047 to make an appointment, and tell everyone you know who has a Pit Bull to do the same! |
CLIICK HERE to see Doc on SAN DIEGO 6 ANIMAL HOUSE!

| Doc is a 12-week-old kitten who is available for adoption at the National Cat Protection Society, in Spring Valley. He was rescued by a volunteer some time ago, and brought to the shelter where he loves to talk to anyone who will listen. He enjoys being held, and will sort of look up at you and chirp....it's his way of talking to you. He's just a really sweet boy who makes the shelter staff very happy. He's playful, good with other cats, and litter-box-trained. His adoption fee is only $75, and that includes the cost of his shots, microchip, de-worming and de-fleaing, and he's been tested for diseases. Stop by the National Cat Protection Society, they're open from noon-to-4:30, Tuesday through Saturday, and they have a no-kill facility with a small retirement center for cats who can never be adopted. |
CLIICK HERE to see Peaseblossom on SAN DIEGO 6 ANIMAL HOUSE! (and HERE to see pictures of Peasebloosm together with her shy brother Puck)Name: Peaseblossom Breed: Domestic Short Hair Age: 3 years old Sex: Spayed Female Organization: Friends of Cats Shelter Address: 15587 Olds Hwy 80, El Cajon Phone: (619) 561-0361 |
| Peaseblossom is a 3 year old, pure white, kitty, named after a fairy in Shakespeare's "Midsummer Night's Dream". I understand she also has a brother at the shelter, named Puck, who is also pure white with beautiful long hair. Both cats are either spayed or neutered, fully vaccinated, have tested negative for diseases like feline leukemia and FIV, they're microchipped and come with a free vet visit after adoption. Still, the adoption fee is only $50, so that's a great deal, and your adoption donation goes right back to support all the hard work the Friends of Cats shelter does for the community. Peaseblossom is very outgoing, which is why she was chosen to appear on television, while her brother is a little too shy for all the excitement of the studio. But they're both very loving and sweet. They haven't been apart since the day they were born three years ago, so ultimately, it would be a dream to get the pair adopted together. If you are interested in learning more about the two beautiful cats, please call Friends of Cats, in El Cajon, or stop by their no-kill facility located on Old Hwy 80, just east of the Lake Jennings Park Road exit off interstate 8. |
CLICK HERE to see Flint on San Diego 6 ANIMAL HOUSE!Name: Flint Breed: Pit Bull Mix Age: 1.5 years old Sex: Neutered Male Organization: Escondido Humane Society Phone: (760) 594-7605 |
| Flint is a very friendly, young, neutered male PitBull mix, available for adoption from the Escondido Humane Society's Foster Care Program. He's currently living with a guardian in Rancho Bernardo, and enjoys walking around at Kit Carson {ark. He lives in a condo, and he's demonstrated that he doesn't need a lot of space to be a happy dog. He just wants love and attention, and some fun doggie toys. Flint is a snuggler, so you'll definitely have a buddy to cozy up to while watching TV and eating your popcorn. He's already house-trained, and crate-trained. He's friendly to all, but would do best in an adult only home, or one with older kids. because of his energy level and size. His adoption fee includes the cost of neutering, vaccinations, microchip ID and registration, de-worming, de-fleaing, a complimentary wellness check at local vet, a free starter bag of food, educational materials, and complimentary consultations with the shelter's behaviorist for the rest of his life. Also, the dog license is included if you live in the town of Escondido, San Marcos or Poway. That's an incredible deal for $110. If you are interested in learning more about Flint please contact the foster coordinator Julie directly at 760-594-7605. Or call the Escondido Humane Society at 760-888-Bark. If Flint is not the dog for you, please go to the shelter and visit the many other animals such as cats, kittens, puppies and birds to adopt or foster. The shelter is open from 10 a.m - 5 p.m. 7 days a week at 3450 East Valley Parkway in Escondido. |

| Lilly is a 10-month old, spayed female Chihuahua and Jack Russell Terrier mix. She weighs only 8 pounds, and probably won't get much bigger than this. She's very loving, and bonds quickly to her people. She'd do well in a home with other small dogs or cats, and she'd even be good with gentle children who are over the age of 4. She loves going on her walks, and has already learned how to use a doggie door, which is a great thing for a potential new owner. She's fully vaccinated, and microchipped. For more information on how you can adopt Lilly, please contact Chihuahua Rescue of San Diego, at 858-277-3557, or you can get a jump-start by going to RescueAChihuahua.com and downloading an application. I'm sure you have heard the stories and seen national news coverage about how there are so many unwanted Chihuahuas in California, that we're shipping them out by the hundreds to other states. So, even if you don't want to adopt a Chihuahua right now, call Chihuahua Rescue to find out how you can become a temporary foster home for a homeless Chihuahua until a permanent family can be found. When you foster a dog, vet care and food expenses are covered, so you can still help to save a Chihuahua, even if your not ready to commit to adopting one right now. . |

He originally wound up in the shelter after being found as a stray, and then he was adopted to a family with small children. They returned him because they said he played a little too rough with the kids. So now, the shelter has to find him a home with a family of adults, or a family with older kids. He isn't a mean cat, in fact, they say he's super friendly and loves to talk to everyone. He'll probably be okay with other animals, as well. He's litter-box-trained, and all pets from the shelter are fully vaccinated and microchipped. The El Cajon Animal Shelter is located on North Marshall Street. From the 8, take N. | James is 2.5 year old, Chihuahua mix who not only needs to be adopted, but is also in need of an immediate temporary foster home. He's been in a FOCAS foster home for quite some time now, but the foster mom has recently had to take on a second job, and will no longer be available to let James in and out of her condo during the day. So, even if you're not ready for a permanent addition to your family, please consider calling to find out how you can provide a temporary home until a forever family can be found. It doesn't cost anything, all food and medical expenses are covered. You would just be providing a loving environment. James is a little shy, therefore he'd do best in a quiet, adult only home where he can continue to thrive. He LOVES going on long walks or jogs and is really the perfect indoor, condo-type dog. He has doggie friends but would like to have your undivided attention at home. James knows a couple of basic commands, he's completely housetrained, and sleeps quietly in his crate all night. And while he is entertained with a rousing game of fetch, he is also content to just sit with you and relax. His foster mom says his happy personality makes all the bad days melt away the moment she walks in the door. If you're interested in adopting or fostering James, please contact Becky, with Aussies & Others rescue at 619-469-3748. She's working with FOCAS to help place this guy as quickly as possible. |

| Bobby is a 2-year-old, scruffy Terrier available for adoption from the Escondido Humane Society. He's cute and small, weighing in at only 12-pounds, full-grown. He's been at the shelter since October, when witnesses saw a man in a truck open the door and dump him out at Kit Carson Park. His luck changed when the shelter was able to place him into a loving foster home, until a forever family can be found. He's housebroken, loves playing with his stuffy toys, and he gets along well with the other small dog in the house. He's crate trained and sleeps quietly through the night on his doggie bed. He's also an excellent walking partner. Like all dogs adopted from the Escondido Humane Society, he's neutered, microchipped, fully vaccinated, de-wormed, de-fleaed, and comes with a complementary health check from one of 20 local veterinarians. The shelter is open 7 days a week from 10 a.m. to 5 p.m., and the foster coordinator is personally taking calls on her cell phone for Bobby, so that nobody gets stuck in voicemail. So please call today to meet Bobby or one of hundreds of other pets for adoption at the shelter, which is located on East Valley Parkway, in Escondido |

| Annie is a sweet girl who appears to be a mix of Beagle and Border Collie. She's about 7 years old, and at 30-pounds she's just the perfect size for a new best friend. She walks nicely on a leash, and would love a family who could take her on a walk every day. She knows some basic commands, and she's fine with other dogs. Annie will make the perfect addition to just about any family. Her size and personality would even be ideal for a retired couple who likes to travel in an RV. Come meet this girl and you just might decide to make her the newest member of your family. Her adoption fee is $110 and that includes her spay, vaccinations, and microchip ID. The public is encouraged to come up and adopt Patriotic Pets at the Camp Pendleton Animal Shelter. All animals are spayed or neutered, fully vaccinated and microchipped before adoption. | Sparrow is an 11-week-old kitten who goes by the nickname of Monkey, because she likes to climb the cage bars and greet people as they walk by. She can also been found playing with her toys and placing them into her water dish. Obviously, she has character...and she's litter-box-trained, too. She's available for adoption from the National Cat Protection Society, on Birch Street in Spring Valley. They're a true "No Kill" shelter with a separate retirement facility for cats that are considered unadoptable. They also have about 35 cats up for adoption right now, and all cats are microchipped, spayed or neutered, dewormed, given a flea treatment, vaccinated, and tested for feline leukemia. The adoption fee is $75. They're open Tuesday through Saturday from 12 to 4:30, and even if you're not interested in adopting a cat, stop by and ask about the volunteer opportunities at the shelter. It'll be a great way to start off the new year! |

| It's always a challenge to find a home for a senior dog, so I'd ask anyone watching today to please go to our website later and forward the link to this pet segment to every dog lover on your e-mail list, and ask them if they have room in their hearts and homes for this wonderful girl I'm about to introduce you to. Lizzy is a 12-year-old, 46-pound, female Shepherd mix, who is in a foster home through the Escondido Humane Society. Her foster family says she's a joy to have around...she gets along well with the other family dog, and the two children in the household. She's housebroken and crate-trained. They say she's obedient, smart and gentle. Of course she's spayed, up to date on her vaccinations, and microchipped. If you're interested in Lizzy, I'd ask you to call the foster coordinator directly at 760-594-7605 to make arrangements to meet Lizzy. I'd also encourage you to call her to find out how you, too, can become a foster for wonderful dogs, like Lizzy, who may be considered a little too old to compete for attention with all the younger, cuter dogs in a shelter environment. It's so important to place the senior pets in foster homes where they have a warm, loving environment, until a permanent home can be found. It costs you nothing....food and medical care is provided. Meanwhile, if Lizzy is not the dog for you, you can stop by the Escondido Humane Society between 10 a.m. to 5 p.m., 7 days per week, to check out hundreds of other dogs and cats available for adoption. And a big THANK YOU, on behalf of all the animals, to all the San Diego 6 Couch Potatoes who dropped off donations to the station for the Holiday Pet Food and Toy Drive. |
CLICK HERE to see Sarah on San Diego 6's ANIMAL HOUSEName: Sarah (ID# 41376) Breed: Terrier mix Age: 7 years old Sex: Spayed Female Organization: Escondido Humane Society, 3450 E. Valley Pkwy in Escondido Phone: (760) 594-7605 ![]() |
| Here's our first project for 2010...to find this sweet, deaf dog a family to love. Sarah is a 7-year-old, 42-pound female terrier who's currently in a foster home with a family who says she is an absolute pleasure to have as a houseguest. She's well-behaved, housebroken, crate-trained and loves to be around people. While she was at the shelter, they discovered she had a severe ear infection. Because of generous donations from the public, she was able to receive an operation which removed both of her ear canals to avoid chronic and very painful ear infections in the future. Unfortunately, that also leaves her deaf, but otherwise in perfect health. Maybe because of her lack of hearing, she should go to a home with older kids, however, the foster mom's grandchildren visited during the holidays, and Sarah just loved them. The kids were 4, 7 and 10 years of age. The Escondido Humane Society is located on East Valley Parkway and they're open from 10 a.m. to 5 p.m., 7 days a week. We're providing the foster coordinator's direct cell number for this segment so that you can reach someone immediately if you're interested in adopting Sarah....However, if you want to see hundreds of other dogs for adoption, stop by the shelter today. All pets are spayed or neutered, fully vaccinated, microchipped and come with a free vet visit after adoption. |
CLICK HERE to see Maggie on San Diego 6's ANIMAL HOUSEName: Maggie Breed: Maltese Poodle mix (Maltepoo) Age: 6 years old Sex: Spayed Female Organization: Animal Rescuers Without Borders Phone: (619) 977-3593 |
| Maggie is a 6-year-old Maltepoo, which is the "designer name" for a Maltese mixed with Poodle. She's full grown, and weighs only 13 pounds. She was given up by her previous family because, even though they had her since she was a puppy, they didn't feel comfortable with her around their 2 year old child. When the rescue got her, they discovered that she had trick-knees, which is typical in toy breeds. So, when she injured herself playing, the rescue went ahead and had surgery on both knees to just fix any future potential problems. Now she's good as new, and whoever adopts her won't have to worry about having a $2,500 surgery down the line. She's in a foster home with other dogs, but the foster mom admits that she thinks Maggie would rather be an only pet, as she resource-guards things like toys and socks. She's crate trained, housebroken, walks well on a leash, loves to play with toys and go on car rides, and she even knows how to ring a bell at the door when she needs to go outside. | Cailin has an amazing personality and wants nothing more than to spend time with people. When she's allowed cuddle time, you can see the difference it makes...she actually lights up! She's quiet, well-trained, and perfectly behaved at the shelter, but because she's a black dog, she's completely overlooked by potential adopters. If someone would just spend a minute with her at the shelter, they'd see how wonderful she is. She's even great with the kids. Her only flaw is that she's picky about other dogs, but when she's with a mellow, smaller dog, she seems to do well. Plus, the shelter insists on doing an interaction first with any other family dogs, so if there are any issues at all, they'd recommend another dog for you. The North County Humane Society in Oceanside is open from 10 a.m. to 5 p.m., and they're located at 2905 San Luis Rey Road. All pets are altered, vaccinated, de-wormed, come with health insurance, a free vet visit, & training DVD. |

| Baxter is a young Boxer/Pittie mix. They call him the Lucky Charm of the shelter because any dog that gets put in the kennel with him gets adopted. That's great for the other dogs, but poor Baxter wants a home, too. He's super active and affectionate. He takes his treats very gently, and could probably go to a home with kids who are big enough to play with him. He's about 50-pounds. He has a crooked little tail that looks like it got slammed in a door when he was a puppy, but it doesn't seem to bother him at all. The North County Humane Society in Oceanside is open from 10 a.m. to 5 p.m., and they're located at 29-05 San Luis Rey Road. All pets are altered, vaccinated, de-wormed, come with health insurance, a free vet visit, & training DVD. And I'll give you a trick to get through the voicemail system more quickly: when you call and get voicemail, hit the number 4 key, then number 3, and then number 3 again to get to the adoption department. Or, just head on over to the shelter and meet Baxter. Even if he's not the one for you, there are hundreds of other animals you can meet. |
CLICK HERE to see Leah on San Diego 6's ANIMAL HOUSEName: Leah Breed: Cattle Dog Mix Age: 1 year old Sex: Spayed Female Organization: Aussies & Others Rescue Phone: (619) 469-3748 |
| Leah is a Cattle Dog mix, she may have a little Pittie in her, and she weighs in at about 36-pounds and is just one year old....so she's as big as she's ever going to get. She was rescued by a wonderful woman who spotted her at the Escondido Humane Society and noticed that she was ready to give birth any day. Aussies and Others Rescue pulled her from the shelter and put her in a foster home where she had two puppies. Only one survived, but Leah has been an excellent mom to that one puppy. She plays with him all the time and tries to keep him busy and out of trouble. She also gets along great with the other dogs in the foster home, and she's friendly to everyone she meets. She's crate-trained, housebroken and walks great on a leash. She's an exceptionally gentle, loving girl who will make an excellent companion for anyone looking for a dog with a great personality. |

Name: Jameson Breed: Pit Bull Age: 8 years old Sex: Neutered Male Organization: North County Humane Society in Oceanside Phone: (760) 757-4357 |
| Jameson is a mature dog with a heart of gold. He's been in a shelter for months, and really needs to be placed with a family of his own before the holidays are over. Even though he's 8 years old, he is young at heart, and his loyal, loving personality makes him an ambassador for his breed. He thoroughly enjoys his outings, and walks very well on a leash. He loves to play ball, shake his toys around and play in the grass. He's good with other dogs, and he'll be good with children who are big enough to play with him. He bonds deeply with the people he loves, making him a favorite among the volunteers who care for him at the shelter. Just give him a chance, and see if you fall in love. His adoption fee includes neutering, vaccinations, deworming, a month of pet health insurance, a training DVD, and a free vet visit. The North County Humane Society is located in Oceanside at 29-05 San Luis Rey Road. They're open Monday through Sunday, 10 a.m. to 5 p.m. Instead of buying a pet from a store or a breeder, please give a shelter dog a chance this holiday season. You'll be saving a life. |

She's indifferent to other dogs and cats....but really, REALLY loves her humans. She's in indoor dog. She's about 10 pounds overweight and needs someone who can help her stick to a diet and exercise plan. CLICK HERE to see Annie Jean on San Diego 6's ANIMAL HOUSEName: Annie Jean Breed: Cocker Spaniel Age: 7 years old Sex: Spayed Female Organization: San Diego Spaniel Rescue Phone: (619) 922-0545 ![]() |
| Annie Jean is a 7-year-old Cocker Spaniel who is available for adoption from San Diego Spaniel Rescue. Cocker Spaniels have an average life-expectancy of 14 years or more, so even though she's 7, she still has plenty of years ahead of her! She was found lost on the streets in the North County, with limited vision due to cataracts. When she was spayed, they also found she had a hernia that needed repair, which the rescue took care of, of course. She's a sweet, lovable companion, and she's completely housetrained, and even knows how to use a doggie door. She's crate-trained, as well. She loves to cuddle and go on walks. Obviously our goal today is to find a family that would want to adopt Annie Jean and make her a part of their family....but even if you're not interested in adopting her, maybe you'd be interested in helping them with the eye surgery she'll need to help fix her cataracts. If there's someone out there who would like to make a donation, or a vet who would do the surgery for free or for a discount, contact San Diego Spaniel Rescue to see how you can help. If Annie Jean isn't the dog for you, but you love the breed, then call to meet one of the dozens and dozens of other Cocker Spaniels available for adoption. Help us find homes for them over the holidays! |

| Randall is a 3-year-old, neutered male cat who is available for adoption from the National Cat Protection Society, in Spring Valley, where he was dumped at the front gate, and left to fend for himself. He's in this shelter FULL of cats, and the truth is, he'd rather just be with people. Whenever visitors come to the shelter, he's right there, front-and-center, to greet them with a hearty meow. He doesn't seem to be interested at all in handing out with the other felines, though. So if you're not looking to fill up your home with animals, and you think you might be happy with just one, he may be the perfect match for you. His low adoption fee includes full vaccinations, he's been microchipped, de-wormed and neutered. Plus, he's already littter box trained. The National Cat Protection Society is located at 90-31 Birch Street in Spring Valley, and they're open Tuesday through Saturday from Noon to 4:30 p.m. |
CLICK HERE to see Ebony on San Diego 6 Animal House!Name: Ebony Breed: Chihuahua Age: 3 years old Sex: Spayed Female Organization: Chihuahua Rescue of San Diego Phone: (868) 277-3557 Web: RescueAChihuahua.com |
Ebony is a 7-pound, spayed female Chihuahua. She is only about 3 years old, and was just left behind in a yard after renters moved out of a home. Fortunately, a neighbor discovered her out there without food or water, and started taking care of her just in time. That's when Chihuahua Rescue was called in. Ebony is a wonderful, healthy dog now that she's in a foster home where she's been cared for, well fed, and received necessary vet care...but you might notice that fleas have eaten away the tips of her ears. That's just left over from when she was neglected. She's a very friendly girl who gets along well with other dogs her size. She enjoys being held by people, and likes going on walks. She's been fully vaccinated, spayed and microchipped. If you'd like to meet and adopt Ebony, you can get started by filling out an application, online, at RescueAChihuahua.com. If you don't have internet access, call 858-277-3557. |

Angelina is a beautiful Angora mix with soft, fluffy white fur. She was found on the streets of Escondido and had a dirty, sticker-filled coat. Since then, she's been cleaned and groomed, and she's ready to find a loving family who will keep her as an indoor pet. Angelina is friendly and sweet and, like all bunnies, needs gentle handling. She'll also require weekly combing to prevent mats. Her adoption fee is only $45, and she is spayed and microchipped. She also comes with a free certificate for a wellness exam from a vet who specializes in rabbits. Rabbits are considered "exotic" animals...a vet visit and spay surgery could cost someone hundreds of dollars...so the $45 adoption fee is a great DEAL. Please call Jenny at 760-749-42-79 to get more information on Angelina. For other types of pets to adopt, call the shelter directly at 760-888-BARK |

| Gracie is a 5-year-old Labrador retriever. She survived a terrible attack by a shelter kennel mate that nearly killed her, but fortunately, she's in a loving foster home now where her physical wounds are healing. According to her foster mom, she's a sweet, loving girl who walks really well on a leash, rides perfectly in the car, and loves to snuggle. She's grateful to just sit beside her people and be touched. She's completely housetrained, and gets along with other dogs in the foster home. Her challenge is that she LOVES to eat and needs to shed a few pounds. Her adoption fee is $250, and all dogs from Labradors & Friends Rescue are spayed or neutered, fully vaccinated, and vet checked. |
![]() CLICK HERE to see Bronson on San Diego 6's ANIMAL HOUSE Name: Bronson Breed: German Shepherd Age: 18 months Sex: Neutered Male Organization: So. Cal German Shepherd Rescue Phone: (619) 228-3570 |
| Bronson is a big, beautiful, light-colored German Shepherd. He has some cute wrinkles in his forehead...you can tell he's thinking about something important....like maybe what's for dinner. He hasn't had a lot of attention from people during his lifetime, but hopefully that will change. He loves attention, and he's your typical loyal German Shepherd. |
CLICK HERE to see Alex & Winnie on San Diego 6's ANIMAL HOUSE (Update: Alex has been adopted/Winnie still need a forever home)Names: Alex & Winnie Breed: Domestic Medium Hair Age: 4 mohipped, de-wormed and de-flead. Call for more information, or just show up at the big event. Sex: Male/Female Organization: The Rescue House Phone: (760) 591-1211 |
| Alex and Winnie were taken to a shelter with the rest of their siblings and their mom, when they were only a week old...too young to survive in a shelter environment. The Rescue House pulled them from the shelter and placed them in a foster home until they were old enough to be adopted. Now these playful kittens, and many other cats and kittens will be available this weekend at a ginormous adoption event. |

Speed is a pretty, brindle-colored, ex-racing dog, who has been at the shelter since August 1st. She was rescued from the Caliente racetrack when she was no longer useful. |
|
| Sue is a 1 year old, spayed female, petite torti. She's current on all her vaccinations, tested negative for feline leukemia and FIV, she's microchipped and comes with a free vet visit, all for only $50. She was dumped at a vet's office when she was pregnant. The veterinarian took her to the shelter where she had 5 kittens, who have all been adopted. She's extremely playful and loves to run around and chase a laser light. She gets along with all people, and loves other cats, as well. For the past couple of months, it seems like every feline from the Friends of Cats shelter that we've featured was either a pregnant cat that was dumped at the shelter, or one of the kittens from a pregnant cat that was dumped at the shelter. Please, if you own a dog or cat, spay and neuter it immediately. There are services out there to spay and neuter your animals for free if you can't afford it....but the thing we can't afford, it to keep trying to find homes for pets in this economy. |
|
| Louie is a 4-month-old neutered male kitten, who was hand-raised by a shelter volunteer. He's litter box trained and loves to play. Like all adoptable cats from the National Cat Protection Society, he's had all his shots, and he's been dewormed. He's also microchipped. The shelter is located in Spring Valley, at 90-31 Birch Street. |

| People are shocked to hear that Greyhound racing is alive and well in the US, resulting in the deaths of approximately 10,000 dogs each year. Thriller is an ex-racer at the Caliente track, where he severely broke his leg in July. Fortunately, instead of being euthanized, someone brought him to the Greyhound Adoption Center, where he was able to receive treatment for multiple fractures. He has a sweet disposition and is social with both dogs and people. |

| Aspen is a wonderful, big boy who loves to be pet, and cuddled. He was rescued from a ‘meat’ operation where the breeder simply walked away and left hundreds of rabbits to starve to death. He was brought to San Diego House Rabbit Society to find a new home and we know he’ll make a wonderful companion to some lucky family. |

| Sundance is an 8-year-old, buff-colored American Cocker Spaniel who is a big bundle of love. Since being in foster care, he's lost 15 pounds, so you can imagine how overweight he was when he first arrived. Sundance and his buddy, Butch Cassidy, a black Cocker Spaniel who is also available for adoption, were found roaming in a desert neighborhood a couple of months after their owner passed away. Fortunately, a neighbor was able to catch the two, and get them to San Diego Spaniel Rescue where they were placed in foster care. Sundance is up to date on all his shots, he's micro-chipped, and neutered. According to his foster family, he's good with other dogs, cats and kids! Remember, if you don't feel you're financially able to adopt at this time, please call San Diego Spaniel Rescue and find out how you can at least become a foster home so that you can save spaniels like Sundance, until permanent homes can be found. |

| Minnie is a 6 month old German Shepherd mix puppy. When she first was pulled from a shelter and put in a foster home, they didn't even know what breed she would turn out to be. She was emaciated from lack of food, and had been left untreated for mange for so long that nearly all her hair was gone from the parasites living off her tiny body. She was literally skin and bones. What's so frustrating is how easy it would have been for her previous family to have just treated her with a dose of Revolution, before it got so far. At just 5 months, she was a skinny, hairless, greasy, smelly thing, and all she wanted to do was kiss and cuddle like a normal puppy. But after a little more than a month of quarantine, treatment with medications and holistic foods, Minnie is growing and filling out faster than any puppy they've ever seen. She's healthy, lovable with all people and adores being with other dogs! Call Southern California German Shepherd Rescue today if you'd like to adopt Minnie, or to learn how you can become a foster home, so you, too, can save wonderful puppies who need your help, like Minnie. |
|
| Rolo is a snuggly Pittie mix who loves his people, and he makes his foster family laugh when he tries to crawl unnoticed into their laps. He's under the impression that he's a Chihuahua. He adores children...he lives with a 5 year old, and a 20 month old child, and couldn't be more gentle with them. He loves to play with his Kong toy, and wrestle with his doggie family. He currently lives with three female dogs and he enjoys being the only boy in the house. He should really go to a home with a yard where he can run and play, because he probably won't be the best dog to take to an off-leash area as he tends to pounce on other dogs, and not everyone appreciates his exuberance. He's crate-trained and housebroken, knows his basic commands and enjoys going on hikes with his family. He's a perfect example of what makes a Pit Bull so lovable. Please call Pit Bull Rescue, San Diego today to learn about adopting Rolo, or go to their website to fill out an application! |

| How adorable is this little guy? In addition to being handsome and the perfect size, he's good with dogs, cats and kids! George has been in a foster home since May, along with 4 other dogs and 3 cats from a severe animal hoarding situation, where a person had 200 dogs and 80 cats on a property in Mojave, CA. Fortunately, the courts allowed some of our local rescues to save the animals. When George was initially rescued, his coat was matted and filthy, so he was taken to a groomer who transformed him into the beautiful creature you see today. The people who are responsible for hoarding these animals are in custody and will be sentenced on July 8th, but there are still so many more animals who need help. Even if George isn't the dog for you, please call the rescue to find out how you can help another animal by becoming a temporary foster home. |
|
| Angel is a 1 year old, diluted tortoiseshell kitty, with short hair. She was brought to the Friends of Cats shelter in August as a pregnant stray....so she was only about 7 months old, and already pregnant....which is a perfect example of why we have such a huge pet overpopulation crisis. She had 5 babies and raised them all at the shelter, and of course while the tiny kittens get adopted, one year old cats find it harder to find a home. The thing is, she's still just a very young kitty, who is super sweet, loves to give face nuzzles, and she's now spayed, vaccinated, tested for any diseases, and micro-chipped.
The Friends of Cats shelter is celebrating their 80th anniversary right now, so please stop by and let this long-time, reputable shelter know that you appreciate the work they do. They're located on Old Hwy 80 in El Cajon, just off the 8, and they're open every day, except Monday! |
CLICK HERE to see Leilani on San Diego 6's ANIMAL HOUSE!Name: Leilani Breed: Pit Bull mix Age: 2 years Sex: Spayed Female Organization: Pit Bull Rescue San Diego Phone: (858) 361-3592 |
Lelani was originally a stray who wound up at the shelter and caught the eye of a volunteer who called Pit Bull Rescue to pull her from the shelter and place her in a foster home, where she currently resides. She gets along with the other dogs and puppies....in fact, she's currently living with three other dogs. She's housebroken, crate trained, knows her basic commands, very affectionate and while she has a medium energy level, she's also pretty content just snoozing in front of the television with her people. She loves to play with her basketball, and is always up for a good game of tug. As with all legitimate rescue agencies, Pit Bull Rescue spays, neuters, fully vaccinates and micro-chips all dogs before they're adopted...so you have the confidence of adopting from a group who has been around for a long time in this community. |

| Blossom & Berry are a bonded pair of Dutch-mix bunnies. They're devoted companions, and both are still under a year old. Blossom is the larger of the two, with blue eyes, and Berry is a smaller dwarf size. They're very active, litter box trained, and are used to living indoors. |

| If a cat has 9 lives, then Hurricane Jose has definitely used up two of them. The first time, he was lucky enough to escape Hurricane Katrina, to be shipped off to San Diego with more than 40 other felines. In May of 2007, he was the last of the cats to be adopted from the Friends of Cats shelter....but recently, he was returned to the facility after more than a year on the streets fending for himself. Turns out the family that adopted him, moved and left him behind. Luckily, some great people took care of him until his microchip was traced back to the shelter. Now, Hurricane Jose is ready for adoption again. He's good with kids and other cats, current on all his shots, and comes with a free vet-check....all for only $50. |
|
| Charles is a friendly, laid-back, 10-year-old boy who enjoys going on walks and meeting new friends. He's good with other dogs and doesn't even mind sharing his foster home with kitties. He's so well behaved, and wants nothing more than to be with his people. He'll happily snuggle up with you at night in bed, or chill-out with you on the couch in front of the TV. He's housetrained, knows his basic commands, and is way past all that naughty puppy stuff. He likes to ride shotgun in the car, and takes treats like a little gentleman. It's a tough time for adoptions due to the economy, and it's even tougher to find an adopter for a 10-year-old Pittie....but all we need is one person to see this and give this boy a loving home. For all of you Pittie lovers out there, even if you can't adopt at this time, call Pit Bull Rescue of San Diego and find out how you can volunteer, or foster a dog until a permanent home can be found. It'll be your chance to save an innocent dogs life, and there are so many great dogs, like Charles, right now who need your help. |
